guth students receive mystery package from guatamala

At the beginning of each school year, Guth second-grade teacher Krista Rush encourages her students to ask friends and families who are traveling to send postcards from their different locations. It's an ongoing part of the Social Studies program to introduce youngsters to cultures from around the world.

A couple traveling in Florida became aware of the effort and began sending postcards, especially to students who had not received any cards. Just before Easter, the class received a large box in the mail from these travelers!

Inside the box were Easter eggs for each student filled with a homemade beaded key chain and worry doll made by the Mayan Woman in Guatamala. The worry doll is made so you can tell your worries to them. They also sent crocheted balls for the boys and beaded flower bracelets for the girls.

hese travelers work with a charity called Miracles in Action, which supports the efforts of these women and, in fact, started their cottage industry for them so they can stay home and care for their children.

"I feel truly blessed as a teacher, to share in this excitement with my class," said Krista. "It is an amazing act of kindness and how a simple program in school can touch the lives of other people."
