K-12 COMPUTER EDUCATION
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Goal 1
Students will understand important issues associated with a highly technological society.
1.1    Students will develop an understanding of the impact computer technologies have on individuals and societies.
1.2    Students will describe the historical milestones associated with the evolution of the computer and other information technologies.

Goal 2
Students will exhibit responsible and ethical behavior in the use of computer and information technologies.
2.1    Students will demonstrate responsible use and care of equipment.
2.2    Students will behave ethically with regard to computers and information processes.

Goal 3
Students will develop a basic understanding of computers as systems, and of the similarities and differences among computing and information networks.
3.1    Students will be able to describe computer and information systems in terms of their input, processing, and output components.
3.2    Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationships among input, processing, and output components of a computer system.
3.3    Students will be able to compare computer systems in terms of their operational characteristics.
3.4    Students will understand and use correct computer terminology.

Goal 4
Students will select and use computer technologies and peripheral devices to solve information-related problems.
4.1    Students will select and use computer technologies to access and retrieve information from a variety of sources.
4.2    Students will select and use computer technologies to organize and manage information.
4.3    Students will select and use computer technologies to communicate and present information.
4.4    Students will select and use peripheral devices to solve information-related problems.
4.5    Students will demonstrate the ability to perform basic computer procedures properly.

Goal 5
Students will work cooperatively and independently.
5.1    Students will work cooperatively to plan, design, and create projects.
5.2    Students will effectively complete individual assignments.

Goal 6
Students will identify careers associated with computer and information technologies and describe the relationship between self-selected target careers and computer skills and processes.
6.1    Students will explore career options available to them in the field of computer and information technologies.
6.2    Students will target potential career options based on their specific interests and abilities and relate them to computer and information technologies.
6.3    Students will understand the importance of regularly updating their computer-related skills as technologies evolve.

Goal 7
Students will use computer and information technologies in all disciplines.
7.1    Students will use computer and information technologies to reinforce and enhance learning in all disciplines.
7.2    Students will use computer and information technologies to amplify creative expression in all disciplines.
7.3    Students will apply the knowledge learned and abilities developed to both familiar and novel situations.
